Globus is a large undeground shopping area in Kiev main square – Maydan Nezalejnosti. “Sometimes, we fish out two buckets of coins in a week. On weekends and holidays people usually throw more coins”. Each Thursday evening some movement begins, unnoticed by Globus visitors. Most Kiev inhabitants know well that the city stands on seven hills. But you can bet for any sum that nobody can enumerate those hills. Why? Because there are more than 7 visible hills, at least 15. Some of them are called “mounts” (Mikhaylovskaya, Baykova, Batyeva, Cherepanova) though their size hardly allows to call them even hills. One more thing is that so called hills are actually the spaces between ravines or shores of ancient small rivers. A Tour Of Chernobyl Is Troubling Visit   (travel article, updated on 27 April 2006)

The visit to the Chernobyl power plant begins as a bit of a letdown. I had expected the 30-mile-radius contaminated zone around the plant to be strewn with shriveled tree trunks and rotting cottages and empty of life.
