How did people live in Kiev before bridges?   (history article, updated on 23 November 2006)

It was a common thing for Kiev inhabitants of the 19th century to cross Dnepr on foot in winter and even in the beginning of spring. The whole process will take a few days. That is why, I will advise you to buy your tickets to Ukraine and back online... read more

The Legends of Kiev Hills   (history article, updated on 10 August 2006)

Most Kiev inhabitants know well that the city stands on seven hills. But you can bet for any sum that nobody can enumerate those hills. Why? Because there are more than 7 visible hills, at least 15. Some of them are called “mounts” (Mikhaylovskaya, Baykova, Batyeva, Cherepanova) though their size hardly allows to call them even hills. One more thing is that so called hills are actually the spaces between ravines or shores of ancient small rivers. That’s why geographers consider that Kiev relief is flat, but you will hardly believe it when you get to Kiev and walk up and down its steep streets... read more

A Tour Of Chernobyl Is Troubling Visit   (travel article, updated on 27 April 2006)

The visit to the Chernobyl power plant begins as a bit of a letdown. I had expected the 30-mile-radius contaminated zone around the plant to be strewn with shriveled tree trunks and rotting cottages and empty of life. But after camouflaged guards check our passports and motion our van through the barrier at the edge of the zone, there is oncoming traffic. In the town of Chernobyl, 11 miles from the plant, laundry hangs on balconies, people chat with each other on the street and a small store has well-stocked shelves: bananas, vodka, pasta sauce... read more
